Yep, I’m in New York. And yep, it is wonderful. And not to brag but the weather is like 22 degrees, so it is kind of an indian summer. Later today, I will be meeting with some people working with consumer insights across the Bric countries. I will let you more in on that project some time soon.

For now I just want to show my favourite shop Opening Ceremony. It is like a treasure trove – a very expensive one though. Anyway their shoe department has this way of welcoming people with great lyrics from the Doors:

Hey all – this actually has nothing to do with comms planning, but something with branding I guess. I’m staying in the “penthouse” at this hotel in Cape Town, which is called Hotel Grand Daddy. It’s fabulous. They have actually put real old school trailers up there in stead of rooms. I highly Recommend.

Fantastic branding and story telling for the hotel and real interesting idea. I hear that they have gotten an extraordinary amount of press coverage because of this (and other) stunt(s). A lot different than the plush luxury of Boutique Manolo, where I stayed last time I was in Cape Town, but definitely just as many stories to tell. My trailer is called “Goldielocks and the three bears”.

‘In the tradition of material innovation of AM 90, i constructed a running shoe using the most powerful, must durable and most delicious material known to man: hamburger.’

This video was created by my friend Silvia & Nando from the Spanish/Berlin based brand PotiPoti – visit their shop in Rosenthaler Straße 66 if you come by Berlin.

Like a terrorist group finally taking responsibility for a bombattack, VisitDenmark fianlly took responsebility for the video of beatyful, sweet and almost innoncent Karen who fooled us all in a YouTube video where she asked the world to help her find the man who made her pregnant a year and a half ago. I was one of the suckers who fell in love with the story and I must admit I felt pretty stupid last night when the news brought an interview with the responsable from VisitDenmark.

However, looking at this from a marketingperspective; is this gonna work? Is this a good idea? You can’t argue that they’ve had the viral effect they hoped for, but is it a good effect? I find it hard to find the consumerinsights that has gone into the making of this campaign. Will the rest of the world find Denmark an atractive place to be because a woman like “Karen” copes well here as a single mom? or will Visitdenmark mainly get bad puplicity out of this quite tasteless and “hard to read campaign”. It will defenitly be interesting to follow.

And afterall, Denmark is already such a popular place, with our rightwing policy and high taxes, so what harm can a fake girl who got knocked up with a fake baby and told a fake story, possibly do…

Well as you may know I’m in the midst of writing a book on how Branding is affected by all the new technologies, specifically social media and Branded Utility. In this process I have, to my great pleasure revisited som of the old Post Modern writers. WOW. They just saw all this 30 years ago. A guy like Baudrillard talks about how everything becomes reproductions or fakes of the original which no longer exists because of the mass media reproduction and redefinition of cultural and social symbols. In my mind this really echoes everything from peer-to-peer file sharing to look-a-like goths or other sub/pop cultures to the state of music to advertising, social media, viral comms, etc. It’s all happening:-)

Please read Simulacra and Simulation if you have not already – Its really worth a read.

Just finished the first of two seminars we are hosting on Branded Utility. It went very well. The audience seemed to be very interested in the phenomenon which is certainly good news for us marketers. It is my plan to publish a book on this topic this year – it will have a slightly grander scope and will be called “Branding 2.0″ Basically it is about who you Brand in the new media context, how you relate to and utilize user generated innovation and content, branded communities and utilities, social media as well as the more classic branding disciplines. It is in the making and it should be quite interesting. The first edition will be in Danish. But who knows maybe well do an English version also (or Chinese). Iben Larsen thought it would be funny gimmick too use Google Translate – a utility – to translate a book on branded utilities – and then live with the flaws of course. Then we could say translated into more than 20 languages.

/baek

Insidentally this blogpost looks like this in chinese – not bad at all:
